Get into the groove: Move Your Body

Our ancestors had to hunt, gather, carry babies on their backs, cook, sew, trade, move and groove every day. If they were not constantly on the go, nothing would get done. Be like your ancestors: move your body. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be, and even just by sitting and relaxing, your body can burn additional calories. Muscles require energy; therefore, you are helping your waistline by adding more muscle to your physique.

The key to exercise is to choose activities that you enjoy. There is nothing worse than stressing about a workout class that you do not want to attend. For the most part, that stress is coming from fear. We can always try something new and be surprized by how much we enjoy an activity after we get over the fear of doing it. I personally enjoy Zumba, kick boxing and yoga classes, lifting weights and working with a trainer. I also like being in a group setting and enjoy letting go of my inhibitions. Another bonus of taking group classes is getting out of your comfort zone and making new friends while socializing with people who have like minded interests.

You do not have to be in perfect shape to walk into a gym or health club. Once again, do not let fear overcome your desire to be healthy by investing time and effort into yourself. I generally enjoy home workouts. Popping in a quick workout DVD or following an instructor online is satisfying and convenient from the comfort of my own home.

Think of health now as money in the bank as you age. You’re investing in yourself every minute you “commit to fit.” Not to mention, you are changing your mood and providing your body with feel good chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin. Move your body to feel more comfortable in your own skin because a fit body is a healthy, happy and confident body. Your ancestors would be proud.
