Connection to the Land

Connection to the Land

Studies have shown spending time in nature reduces stress levels. Throughout the seasons how much time do you spend outdoors? Have you ever picked certain fruits and vegetables, then canned them yourself? Our great-grandparents were infinitely more connected the earth then we are. If you look around in any city there are stories of muggings, rape and often murder. To say that country folk do not take part in heinous crime would be foolish and unwise. However, I know many city-dwellers have cabins outside of major city centers and often retire in the country. Why is that?

Country living is honest and true. I know many seniors pale in the aging department in comparison to my grandparents. My Granny often says the food they’ve eaten over the course of their lives, the “good old country air” and the fact that my Papa cuts 6-8 cords of Jack Pine in the spring has made aging easy on the both of them. I, myself, want to buy a small farm like my father’s family and live off the land like my Metis forefathers.

Human life changed with the Agricultural Revolution over 10,000 years ago; we too must not forget our sacred connection the land. Any amount of time you spend outdoors is good for your well-being. We as a culture need to re-connect to the land and learn how to be self-sufficient. Learning how to grow your own food, heat your home and feed your family fish/game you’ve brought home will increase your self-worth. Many of our human brothers and sisters have lost their way, and are not connected to life. I say, spend some time in nature, connect to a God of your understanding and figure out your life’s purpose and I promise you, life will make a lot more sense.
