It’s important to spend time with good company. In our fast paced lives, taking the time to sit down and visit can be a challenge. However, it is vital to nurture and maintain healthy human relationships. These days, people spend more time sending texts than actually talking on the phone. Part of being a human is social connection. Sitting in front of a computer and chatting with people is not the same as speaking in person. You need verbal communication and human contact to understand how someone else feels and to better understand what they are trying to communicate. Non-verbal communication can be confusing, and often misunderstandings occur over texts and social media chatting. The best way to understand how someone feels is to look them in the eyes to see their true expressions.
I suggest putting your phone away the next time you visit with a friend or family member. Actually sit and visit; listen to one another, maintain eye contact and laugh while you are together. Yes, it is nice to receive text messages from other people, but nothing compares to bonding with friends and family in the flesh. Our youth must learn how to communicate like our ancestors did; good old fashioned visiting is good for your soul.
