Rest

Rest

The body, heart, mind and spirit require rest as an essential part of achieving balance. I am grateful to know from a Laryngologist and Speech Pathologist that it is vital for me to rest and take care of my voice. I’m having to not only physically rest my voice, but also consistently stretch and do a variety of vocal exercises.

As a teacher, singer and motivational speaker (soon to be YouTuber) I require to use of my voice. However, it has been extremely frustrating not being able to do what I love and enjoy the use of my voice on a daily basis. I’ve missed out on family gatherings, milestones, work, gigs and everyday chit chat. I have had to recognize that rest is essential and not feel guilty for taking care of myself.

There is only so much we can do and give. Without taking care of our basic needs, we cannot be of service to others. I know people who say they feel constantly tired, busy and have compassion burnout. I get it! My suggestion is to think of rest as an opportunity to take care of and invest in yourself.

It’s been frustrating not being able to teach or sing on a daily basis and having to limit the amount I speak; however, right now it’s a must. There is no way, I can teach when I can hardly talk. On that note, do not be scared or fearful to admit when you need help. There is strength in admitting things are not perfect. I found out today that if I continue to overuse my voice and not rest, I could develop nodes on my vocal chords. I refuse to let my health suffer! Without health, what does one have? In order to maintain well-being, we all need balance and part of balance is rest.

How do you rest? What brings you calm and bliss? Don’t think of rest as a hassle or another to-do, instead let resting revitalize you and restore your health. I send you love and pray you take good care of yourselves and see rest as a good thing, something that is necessary and can bring much comfort into your life.
