Are we raising female leaders? Are women misrepresented throughout the media? What future do our daughters have to look forward to? Recently, I have been quite concerned about how females are represented in movies, music and television. What part do women play in our North American culture? Are we not scholars, leaders, politicians, spiritual leaders, activists, mothers, authors, keepers of water, directors, grandmothers and so on?
I think it’s important to challenge the values that are accepted within our culture. Our daughters are more than sexual objects and home makers. We are the backbone of our society. In the patriarchal culture we have been raised in, women have not been treated with the respect we deserve. However, it is up to us all to challenge those stereotypes and misrepresentations.
I pray our daughters and our daughters-daughters never give up demanding the respect we deserve and lead our communities into a future where girls’ self-worth will be more than sexualizing their bodies. Social media is a tool used to control and distract people. I say, never mind taking several sexualized pictures of ourselves and putting them online; instead, put more time into one’s studies and goals. The best thing we can all do is raise children who think for themselves and demand change to our capitalistic cultural norms and values!
