Fiber is an essential part of the human diet. We need fiber in our diet to slow down our insulin responses and to maintain a healthy digestive system. Fiber is found in complex carbohydrates and whole grains. You can find fiber in a variety of fruits and unrefined grains. I like to add to chia and flax seeds into my recipes as an added source of fiber.
I prefer to eat whole grain breads, specifically sprouted grains. Unrefined grains still have the endosperm of grains intact; meaning, the natural source of fiber and healthy minerals has not been removed during the refining process. Whole grain rice, breads and cereals are packed full of fiber. Eating complex carbohydrates also has the added benefit of slowing down the pancreas when producing insulin. Therefore, it is important for diabetics and people with hyperglycemia to eat fiber throughout their days. Eating fiber will also keep your digestive system optimally functioning, as fiber helps your body expelling toxins on a regular basis. Add more fiber to your diet to keep your body feeling great!
